The Barn
Suretech House, Navi Mumbai
Transformation that transcends
The Barn transforms an industrial shed in Navi Mumbai into a contemporary workspace for Suretech Infrastructure, retaining elements of its original workshop, paint shop, and mechanical repair functions. Conceived alongside the client’s ambitions to rebrand and expand its business, the project demonstrates how a modest budget can become a catalyst for architectural reinvention. Rather than erasing the building’s industrial origins, the intervention builds upon its existing character, recalibrating its material expression and spatial organization to establish a renewed corporate identity.

An industrial shell, reimagined
The building’s corrugated façade establishes a robust industrial presence, articulated by strategically placed apertures in Corten steel. Within, a contrasting palette of warm oak, exposed brick, and black powder-coated steel lends the workspace a sense of material warmth and refinement. The interplay between the rugged exterior and the carefully composed interior creates a distinct identity without resorting to an elaborate or resource-intensive transformation.
A secondary spatial order
The intervention introduces a secondary layer of architectural articulation within the existing industrial shell. Corten steel apertures punctuate the corrugated envelope, while an internal cage of perforated steel establishes an additional spatial order. These elements mediate between enclosure and openness, preserving the building’s utilitarian character while adapting it to the demands of contemporary occupation.
The Barn demonstrates how an architecture of economy can deliver more than functional refurbishment: it can give a growing business a renewed identity, a stronger public presence, and a distinctive position within its market.
