Total Design

From human insight to spatial intelligence

Total Design is our integrated approach to the built environment, connecting every scale of intervention, from urban systems to the finest architectural detail, and every stage of a project, from initial inquiry to long-term performance. It brings design, technology, human experience and material intelligence into a coherent whole, guided by four principles.

Innovative

We embrace new technologies, materials and processes where they create frameworks for meaningful engagement with the people who experience our work.

Responsive

We shape each project in dialogue with its context, responding to its site, climate, culture, client and community.

Performative

We design for environmental responsibility, human well-being and enduring value.

Collaborative

We bring global expertise and diverse perspectives into the making of each project.

Technology with purpose

Innovation informs every stage of our process, from interpreting the brief to the engineering and production of architecture. Through our research platform, we investigate emerging technologies, material systems and fabrication methods alongside the enduring intelligence of vernacular practices. Each is evaluated for its contextual relevance, technical performance and contribution to human experience, enabling us to advance architectural possibilities with purpose, rigor and a future-proof design.

Responsive

“It is the rootedness of the built space that makes architecture exceptional.”

We shape each project in dialogue with its context, responding to its site, climate, culture, client and community.

Design in dialogue with place

We approach each project as an inquiry into the interplay of site, climate, culture and human needs. Through close dialogue with clients and communities, we reconcile aspirations, resources and constraints to develop context-responsive architecture. Participatory engagement informs our process across scales, grounding each intervention in its setting while seeking to enrich the lives and environments it touches.

Performative

We design for environmental responsibility, human well-being and enduring value.

Performance through time

We design buildings and systems for enduring performance, integrating environmental responsibility, resource efficiency and human well-being. Passive strategies, responsible material choices and adaptable planning inform buildings that perform efficiently, respond to changing needs and retain their value over time. Our design longevity strategies anchor human health and well-being at the center of environmental performance.

Collaborative

We bring global expertise and diverse perspectives into the making of each project.

Thinking beyond disciplines

We bring clients, users and a global network of specialists into the design process as active collaborators. By bringing diverse disciplines and perspectives into dialogue, we challenge established assumptions, synthesize collective knowledge and discover more appropriate architectural solutions.

A case for future-proof design

Design longevity

Artificial intelligence and new ways of working are changing how we live and work faster than most buildings can adapt. Spaces become outdated and expensive to refit. Our research-led approach explores how spatial adaptability and enduring design intent can extend a building’s useful life, reducing obsolescence and the need for resource-intensive refits. We see the capacity to evolve as a fundamental measure of architectural sustainability.
